ACTG & HPTN
Annual Network Meetings
The overlapping ACTG and HPTN Annual Network Meetings this year were a fantastic opportunity to learn from the two different networks. Team Legacy members Brian Minalga and Cat Banobi got the benefit of participating in both conferences.
Their words are inspiring for the future of the network and the goal of ending the HIV epidemic.
Heading across town to HPTN the team then enjoyed a joint plenary from the two networks. HANC’s network coordination hearts were happy to see the sharing of knowledge across networks! Among other topics, the audience heard about critical factors for improving outcomes for key populations, addressing drug resistance, and different ART and PrEP options. One of the upcoming studies to improve outcomes for key populations is HPTN 113 (DUO), and the study team was kind enough to
chat with Team Legacy about what their study will do and why it’s important. More to come from this important study!
More also to come from both networks regarding recurring topics at the meetings such as engaging young people, emphasizing HIV and aging, and the need for robust implementation science and behavioral science as efforts continue to ensure that interventions are as successful as possible for key populations.

This year's meeting brought together hundreds of researchers, community representatives, partner organizations, and funders to discuss the Network's scientific agenda and the state of HIV prevention research. Attendees (in-person and virtual) received updates on HPTN research and new information in the HIV prevention field, helping move the science forward. Our HPTN Community Working Group sessions started the meeting with an abstract writing workshop, best practices for community engagement, and presentations on the latest HIV prevention research.
We were excited to partner with the ACTG for a special joint plenary session on Sunday morning, June 16. The presenters from both networks shared critical insights on several topics related to HIV treatment and prevention. These insights were informative and engaging, sparking discussions and further exploration. The morning's agenda concluded with a plenary session showcasing the work of HPTN Domestic and International Scholars, spotlighting the development of the next generation of HIV prevention investigators within the HPTN.

On Monday morning, June 17, our plenaries explored the ideas of 'Building the Prevention Toolbox' and 'Using the Prevention Toolbox,' an opportunity to look at novel HIV prevention strategies and how proven strategies can be effectively implemented. In the evening, we hosted our traditional welcome gathering and poster session, a unique chance to connect with colleagues and discuss the work done at our research sites worldwide.
The Annual Meeting culminated on Tuesday morning, June 18, with the HPTN State of the Network plenary address, a 'not-to-be-missed' opportunity to understand and anticipate the Network's progress and future direction. The session also included updates from the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Division of AIDS leadership, further fueling the anticipation for the future of HIV prevention research. The session concluded with the Ward Cates Spirit Award and Network Awards presentations, inspiring the audience with the recognition of outstanding contributions.
The next HPTN Annual Meeting is scheduled for May 31-June 4, 2025, in Crystal City, Va.
